Adult Orthodontics

Braces aren’t just for kids anymore! Now, more than ever before, adults are seeking orthodontic treatment. Not only can we improve your appearance, but we can improve your health as well! With new technology and materials available, there has never been a better time to start.
Aesthetics
A beautiful smile is a valuable asset and enhances one’s self-esteem both personally and professionally.
Orthodontic treatment can help correct crooked teeth or spaces that you’ve been self-conscious about for years. It can give you the confidence and pride that goes along with straight teeth and a great smile.
Health
Orthodontics is a key factor in improving general oral health. Crowded and misaligned teeth can hinder cleaning efforts, thereby leading to periodontal disease (problems involving the gums and/or bone loss). Crooked teeth and an incorrect bite can also contribute to tooth decay, abnormal wear of the tooth enamel and surfaces, headaches and jaw joint (TMJ/TMD) pain.
Benefits of having properly aligned teeth extend far beyond a confident smile.

Surgical Orthodontics
Orthodontic problems may not only occur dentally but in some cases be related to the jaw. Many people seeking help from their orthodontist have different problems with their jaw, whether it is from problems with talking, chewing or even breathing. The facial appearance and lines of the jaw may also be affected. This is where the benefit of surgical orthodontics comes in, as it can correct a variety of problems that traditional orthodontic treatment with braces can’t.
Just as orthodontics reposition teeth, surgical orthodontics (also known as orthognathic surgery) corrects jaw irregularities to improve the patient’s ability to chew, speak and improve facial appearance. In other words, surgical orthodontics corrects the jaw relationship. The decision whether a jaw operation is needed will be made after a consultation with the orthodontist or a Maxillo Facial surgeon.
Before the operation can be done, the upper and lower teeth need to be aligned with fixed braces. This process usually takes between 6-18 months before the operation. As your teeth move with the braces, you may think that your bite is getting worse rather than better. However, when your jaws are placed into proper alignment during orthognathic surgery, the teeth will then fit into their proper positions.
When you have completed surgery, you should be able to return to school or work within two weeks. After the necessary healing time (about 4-8 weeks), your orthodontist “fine-tunes” your bite. In most cases, braces are removed within 6 to 12 months following surgery. After your braces have been removed, you will wear a retainer

Surgical orthodontics, corrects jaw irregularities that affect chewing, speaking, and facial aesthetics.Unlike traditional orthodontics, it involves surgery to align the jaw, often used in conjunction with braces to ensure proper tooth positioning. The process typically begins with diagnostic imaging to identify the issue. Once the teeth are aligned, surgery corrects the jaw alignment. Surgical orthodontics includes procedures like surgical-assisted rapid palatal expansion, corticotomies, and orthognathic surgery, providing a comprehensive solution for complex jaw problems.
Surgical orthodontics is not done on children or adolescents because they are still growing. The jaw growth must be complete before surgery can be considered. However, the pre-surgery orthodontics can start 12-18 months before having surgery.
Surgical orthodontics is done either on individuals who have not had braces and notice that their jaw is crooked, affecting their appearance, bite and smile, or with patients who have gotten braces but their jaw is causing them problems. It is done in a hospital setting and performed by an oral surgeon. The surgery itself may take several hours to complete, though this depends which procedure was performed. If the patient is getting surgery on their lower jaw, their jawbone will be separated behind their teeth in order to move the jaw backward or forward. With upper jaw surgery, the jaw is positioned backward or forward, lowered or raised, or any combination of these movements. Bone in the jaw may also need to be removed or added for better support and movement. The recovery time takes about 4-8 weeks in total, though you can usually return to work or school after two weeks.
If you are not happy with your jaw, whether because you can’t breathe and it is uncomfortable, or you simply don’t like the appearance of your face, speak to your orthodontist about possible surgical orthodontics. It is not only going to improve how you feel about yourself, but improves chewing and function.

Pre-prosthetics Orthodontics
Orthodontic treatment is sometimes needed before dental implants, crowns, bridges or veneers can be placed. In some cases there are not enough room to place implants. Braces can be used to move the teeth into the right position and to create enough space to place an implant or dental bridge.
Orthodontic treatment can also be used to make sure that opposing teeth do not put too much strain on existing prosthetic structures, like crowns, bridges or implants. This will ensure a longer lifespan of the prosthetic structure and prevent possible problems.
