Early Treatment
(Kids Orthodontics)

Any treatment started around the age of 8 is considered a first phase of orthodontics. In most cases treatment at a young age is not necessary but some young children can greatly benefit from treatment at this stage of growth.

Early evaluation provides both timely detection of problems and greater opportunity for more effective treatment. Prudent intervention guides growth and development, preventing serious problems later.

What are the advantages of early treatment?

- Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
- Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
- Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
- Correct crossbites to avoid permanent damage
- Preserving space for unerupted teeth
- Reducing the need for permanent tooth extractionsl
- Reducing treatment time with braces when older
- Correct thumb-sucking and help improve minor speech problems
Early treatment can significantly simplify or minimise future care. However, in most cases, a second phase of treatment is applied during the teenage years. This second phase will be much shorter and easier due to all of the progress made from the first phase.

A first phase of orthodontics is often misunderstood and frequently over-prescribed. You can be assured that Dr. Fourie only recommends early treatment when it is in your child’s best interests.

If no early treatment is necessary, we offer visits every 6-12 months to carefully monitor growth and development. This allows us to start treatment when it is ideal.
